How to Take Care of Your Georgette Designer Wear

Georgette is a beautiful fabric commonly used for designing stunning anarkalis, sarees, and lehengas for weddings and festive occasions. People often confuse georgette with chiffon fabric; however, georgette has a rougher texture and lavish pleating and draping properties. Tips to Launder Georgette Dresses

Georgette, unlike rayon and cotton, is a very delicate fabric. And therefore, to maintain its sheerness, you must follow a gentle care routine.

We have provided a few tips and tricks to wash and take care of georgette materials. Follow the instructions carefully, unless the dress comes with specific instructions on the product label.

-       Spot Test your Material before you launder them. A water test should suffice. Take an invisible part of the fabric (hem or seam) and immerse it in warm water. Look for reactions like shrinking, tightening, color fading, warping, elongation, or ripple. Often, fabrics take a while to react. Dry cleaning should be your best bet if you notice any of the above reactions after 24 hours.

-       Handwash your garment if there’s no change after the water test. It is also one of the safest methods for georgette fabrics. All you have to do is add two cups of gentle detergent to half a gallon of cool water, immerse the dress, and soak it for half an hour. Do not rub the cloth. Instead, gently agitate the water to release the dirt. Rinse in cool water and hang to dry without wringing it.

-       Dry Clean your dress if it has embroidery, mirror, and sequences fitted.

-       For Machine Wash, turn your dress inside out and place it inside a mesh bag used for machine laundering. Set your washing machine’s function to gentle/delicate wash and use only cold water.

-       For best results, lay the clothes flat in their original shape or hang them on a hanger. Do not use a dryer. Georgette fabrics have the habit of shrinking and wrinkling after laundering. Therefore, we suggest steam ironing them once dried.

-       Store the items only after cleaning to avoid georgette’s typical odor. Do not clip the fabric as they can leave marks. Instead, place them in breathable cotton bags. Do not store in plastic bags as the material can turn yellow.
